Smart Growth America: Economic Development Intern

Smart Growth America is now hiring a paid Economic Development Intern to support programs within its Policy Development & Implementation team (PD&I), which focuses on relationships between smart growth strategies and the economic and fiscal health of communities. In the past year, PD&I has worked with over 40 communities across the nation on issues spanning transit-oriented development, economic revitalization, rural and town planning, small-scale manufacturing, and community engagement. Smart Growth America is a nonprofit organization based in Washington, DC that researches, advocates and leads colations to bring smart growth practices for more sustainable and healthy communities nationwide.

This person will assist in research and analysis projects, develop materials to support technical assistance engagements, and provide day-to-day administrative and logistical support. This position may also assist with preparing grant progress reports, writing content for its newsletter and blog, and providing short-term assistance to other programs as required. This position reports to Smart Growth America’s Vice President for Economic Development.

Requirements

This position requires a motivated, intuitive, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, research, analytical, and organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate logistics associated with event planning. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in teams, keep outstanding to-do lists, and be comfortable juggling multiple assignment and managing their own time. Familiarity with GIS and Microsoft Excel is a plus.

Candidates should have a strong interest in urban planning, economic development, transportation, community growth, or related areas. Candidates should also have at least a bachelor’s degree and an educational background or work experience in public policy, planning, economics, or a related field.

Compensation

Interns for this position receive a stipend of $920 every two weeks. In addition, they will have six days of paid personal leave, and paid leave on all federal holidays that occur within the tenure at Smart Growth America.

Timeframe and Location

This position is full-time, 40 hours a week. A commitment of six months is required.
