JHU Technology Ventures: Commercialization Academy

Are you interested in supporting the development of technology and devices for a more sustainable world, such as clean technology, improving water management, or sustainable agriculture? The Commercialization Academy is an instructional and experiential student employee and intern program that concentrates on providing support for the assessment of the commercial potential and marketing of new technologies disclosed to Johns Hopkins Technology Ventures (JHTV). Interns will be exposed to a wide range of emerging technologies and commercialization opportunities in the JHU community. Interns typically commit >8 hrs. per week.

This program has two distinct purposes:

  • To provide highly-talented, scientifically-trained graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from various scientific disciplines within the Johns Hopkins research community with practical technology transfer experience and to foster innovation and encourage development of skills related to alternative careers in science.
  • To provide precocious undergraduate students from technical backgrounds with an opportunity to create value-adding skills, deepen their relationship with the JHU community, and most importantly, contribute in a hands-on, high-impact way.

Selection Criteria:

  • Broad-based intellectual curiosity: JHU has an enormous amount of faculty in diverse academic areas. Our students are curious and open to learning about any academic area, whether or not it is their area of expertise.
  • An ability to think abstractly and communicate thoughts clearly: Creative thinking and effective communication are essential to tackling complex questions in a team environment. CA interns can think creatively about highly complex ideas and communicate these ideas clearly.
  • A passion to get answers and tell stories: Persuasive story-telling is a necessity when moving or fostering innovation. Our interns are passionate about problem-solving, and are eager to dig deep to create an effective story.
  • A hardworking but flexible personality: The commercialization academy is a team environment. We seek interns that are hardworking, but coachable and easy to work with.
