Focus Areas

E²SHI focuses on supporting research and education in two key areas:

1. Producing & delivering sustainable energy solutions

Developing sustainable energy resources are not only essential for reducing greenhouse gases, but also for preventing the millions of deaths worldwide that occur annually from combustion. E²SHI supports scholars who are leading research in developing new materials for power technologies, who are improving our understanding of how producing energy affects our environment and health, and who are identifying policies and markets for promoting sustainable technologies.

2. Understanding & managing interconnections of food, energy & water systems

As climate change accelerates and impacts the availability and quality of food and water; as markets grow increasingly globalized; and as the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions becomes more critical, the interactions of our food, energy, and water systems grow tighter and more complex. The Institute is working with scholars to understand these interconnections and develop policy and technologies to lessen the impact upon our life support systems of providing food, energy and water for the needs of growing populations and economies.

Not only will atomic power be released, but someday we will harness the rise and fall of the tides and imprison the rays of the sun.
